Re: Regarding the Arbitrary Detention of a Prominent Ethiopian Opposition Leader Mr. Andargachew Tsigie,
Dear Mr. /Madam Ambassador,
The Yemeni Government has arbitrarily detained the Secretary General of an Ethiopian opposition group, Ginbot 7 for Freedom Justice and Democracy, Mr. Andargachew Tsigie, in violation of international law. Mr. Andargachew was in transit from Dubai to a third country, when Yemeni security personnel detained him at the transit area of Yemeniya Airlines.
Mr. Andargachew is perceived as the Mandela of Ethiopia by the Ethiopian people. So, by detaining Mr. Andargachew without any reason, the Yemeni government will severely affect the longstanding relationship between the two countries.
At this very critical time, we have a grave concern that Mr. Andargachew’s life might be endangered. We have concern that Mr. Andargachew might be transferred to the Ethiopian Government.
Mr. Andargachew is an exiled opposition leader fighting for freedom in Ethiopia, not against the government of Yemen. So, we would like the Yemeni people to know that there is no logical reason for the Yemeni Government to involve in Ethiopia's internal affairs.
If Yemeni authorities decide to transfer Mr. Andargachew to the Ethiopian Government and put his life in danger, they will not only grimly affect the longstanding relationship between the two countries, but also, will put the lives of the Yemeni business and diplomatic community in Ethiopia in a grave danger.
Hence, we appeal to the Yemeni People and the Yemeni diplomatic community around the world to put the necessary pressure on the Yemeni government to free Mr. Andargachew Tsigie without any conditions. And we ask the authorities in Sana’a to unconditionally release Mr. Andargachew.
We are all Ginbot 7!
We are all Andargachew!
